Pool Safety
The one fence that always needs a permit. It must be non-climbable, and the run between house and pool has to stay open so you can see the water.

Linear feet is simply the total length along the ground that the fence will run — not an area, and nothing to do with height. Walk the line you want fenced and measure it end to end. If it turns a corner, measure each straight run and add them together.
A few things that trip people up: measure the fence line, not the property line, if they differ. Include gate openings in the total — a 4 ft gate is still 4 ft of fence line. And don't subtract for slopes; we measure along the ground, so a hill needs the same footage as flat land.

Cost depends on the material, length, height, number of gates, and your site conditions. We give you a clear, itemized estimate after a free on-site measurement—no vague ballparks, no pressure.
In Toronto, no—a regular residential fence doesn't need one, and the same is true across most of the GTA. Pools are the exception: a pool enclosure needs a permit before any excavation, and in Toronto an approved Zoning Certificate has to come first. The pool can't be filled until it passes inspection. Permit rules differ by municipality, so we confirm your city's requirements as part of the estimate.
In Toronto, 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in) in your side and rear yard. In the front yard it drops to 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) within 2.4 m of the street-side lot line, and 2.0 m beyond that. Height is measured from the average grade a metre out on either side, so a fence on a slope or a retaining wall gets measured differently than you'd expect.
Limits change from city to city—Newmarket allows 2.1 m at the rear but only 1.0 m at the front, Markham and Richmond Hill cap the rear at 1.8 m, and Oakville requires anything above 1.0 m in a front yard to be open lattice. We confirm your municipality's rules before we build.
