Shop by need

What do you need your fence to do?

Start with the job, not the material. Here's what actually works for each—and what to skip.

Tall board-on-board wood privacy fence

Privacy

You need a solid infill at full height. Board-on-board overlaps so gaps never open as the wood dries.

Best: Wood · Vinyl

Skip open pickets and chain link—they screen nothing.

Aluminum pool safety enclosure

Pool Safety

The one fence that always needs a permit. It must be non-climbable, and the run between house and pool has to stay open so you can see the water.

Best: Aluminum

A solid wood panel there blocks the sightline the by-law requires.

Backyard fence keeping a dog contained

Pets & Dogs

Height stops the jumpers, gap size stops the squeezers, and a buried base stops the diggers. Which matters depends on your dog.

Best: Chain link · Wood

Wide-spaced pickets lose small breeds.

Modern horizontal slat front-yard fence

Curb Appeal

Front-yard limits across the GTA run 1.0–1.5 m, so a front fence is decorative by law. Build it to be looked at.

Best: Aluminum

A 6 ft privacy fence out front won't pass.

Questions

Residential fencing FAQs.

Linear feet is simply the total length along the ground that the fence will run — not an area, and nothing to do with height. Walk the line you want fenced and measure it end to end. If it turns a corner, measure each straight run and add them together.

A few things that trip people up: measure the fence line, not the property line, if they differ. Include gate openings in the total — a 4 ft gate is still 4 ft of fence line. And don't subtract for slopes; we measure along the ground, so a hill needs the same footage as flat land.

A rough estimate is fine for a quote. We confirm the real number at the free on-site measurement, and that's the figure your price is built on.

Cost depends on the material, length, height, number of gates, and your site conditions. We give you a clear, itemized estimate after a free on-site measurement—no vague ballparks, no pressure.

In Toronto, no—a regular residential fence doesn't need one, and the same is true across most of the GTA. Pools are the exception: a pool enclosure needs a permit before any excavation, and in Toronto an approved Zoning Certificate has to come first. The pool can't be filled until it passes inspection. Permit rules differ by municipality, so we confirm your city's requirements as part of the estimate.

In Toronto, 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in) in your side and rear yard. In the front yard it drops to 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) within 2.4 m of the street-side lot line, and 2.0 m beyond that. Height is measured from the average grade a metre out on either side, so a fence on a slope or a retaining wall gets measured differently than you'd expect.

Limits change from city to city—Newmarket allows 2.1 m at the rear but only 1.0 m at the front, Markham and Richmond Hill cap the rear at 1.8 m, and Oakville requires anything above 1.0 m in a front yard to be open lattice. We confirm your municipality's rules before we build.

Most residential projects are installed within a few days once materials are ready, though timing depends on the size and site. You'll get a scheduled install date with your proposal.

Yes. We set posts below the frost line with high-strength concrete collars and choose freeze-thaw-rated materials, so your fence stays straight through the seasons.
